Mairi Hedderwick is an author and an illustrator, best known for the Katie Morag series of children’s books set on the Isle of Struay, which is based on the real-life island of Coll in the Inner Hebrides where Mairi lived at various times for much of her life.

The first of the stories, Katie Morag Delivers the Mail, appeared in 1984. The book was well received, and three more Katie Morag picture-books followed in the next three years. There are now 14 in total and this year filming began for the first of a series of Katie Morag programmes for the BBC Children’s channel CBeebies.

Her other books include Peedie Peebles Summer or Winter Book, Dreamy Robbie!, Robbie’s First Day at School, Robbie’s Trousers, Robbie and Grandpa, Robbie’s Birthday, short 8 page self-read paperbacks for the “Reading 2000 Storytime” primary years reading programme, A Walk with Grannie and The Utterly Otterlys, about a family of otters on a search for a new home

Mairi has also written several books of travel writing for adults, including An Eye on the Hebrides: An illustrated journey, a six month long odyssey, visiting forty different islands from Arran to Lewis.

She is also the illustrator of a growing range of Hebridean stationery.
