JULIA DONALDSON
AN HOUR WITH JULIA DONALDSON
Julia and her husband Malcolm will be acting out Julia’s stories and singing her songs, with lots of help from the audience.
Come and meet a kind witch, a clever ladybird and many other characters from Julia’s books, and be prepared for a possible guest appearance by the Gruffalo himself. After the event, Julia will be signing copies of her books, including two newly published ones – The Further Adventures of the Owl and the Pussy-cat and Sugarlump and the Unicorn.
Age Range: 5+
Julia Donaldson MBE originally wrote songs for children’s television but concentrated on writing books after one of these, “A Squash and a Squeeze”, was made into a children’s book in 1993.
The Gruffalo, illustrated by Axel Scheffler, is her best known creation. Published in 1995, it has become a modern classic, sold more than four million copies, won an armful of awards and been turned into a film. Among the accolades, BBC listeners voted it their favourite book for reading out loud at bedtime.
Of her 184 published works, 64 are widely available in bookshops. The include Room on the Broom, Rabbit’s Nap, Fox’s Socks and Princess Mirror-Belle. The remaining 120 are intended for school use and include her Songbirds phonic reading scheme, which is part of the Oxford Reading Tree.
Julia Donaldson was Children’s Laureate from 2011-2013. At the last count she had won 30 awards for her books and been shortlisted for 23 more.
