VAMPYR: Carl Theodor Dreyer 1932 (French/German)
With specially commissioned live piano soundtrack by Peter Urpeth.
“The only film worth watching … twice.” Alfred Hitchcock
Based on J Sheridan LeFanu’s collection of supernatural stories Through a Glass Darkly, Vampyr has had a profound influence on the development of cinema as an artform. Legendary Danish director Dreyer leads the viewer, as though in a trance through a sensual and distracted waking-dream, a zone between reality and the supernatural.
A student of the occult enters a village, which is under the curse of a vampire. His growing acquaintance with a family there soon opens up a network of uncanny associations between the dead and the living, which pulls him into an unsettling, and upsetting mystery.
