ISLAND LIGHTHOUSES & The Mystery of the Flannan Isles

John A Love

A biologist, author and illustrator from Inverness, John Love has lived in South Uist for over twenty years. He has been fascinated by islands and their lighthouses ever since first visiting the Bass Rock some fifty years ago. Cruising round Britain as a lecturer since his retirement some four years ago he has been able to add to his already extensive list of island lighthouses visited and photographed.

John will give talks on lighthouses in Barra, Uist, Harris and Stornoway, concentrating on Barra Head, Shillay, Eilean Glas, and the Flannan Isles, respectively.  Writer/poet Kenneth Steven will also be involved in the Stornoway event about the Flannans, which will also refer to the 150th Anniversary of the Butt of Lewis lighthouse.

Kenneth Steven is first and foremost a poet, but he’s also a writer of fiction and a children’s author. His tenth collection of poetry, published by Birlinn, is a sequence of work on the Celtic Christian hermits likely to have made the voyage from Iona to Iceland in the 8th Century. He has made many programmes for BBC Radio, one of the most recent on the mystery of the lost keepers of the Flannan light.

Tuesday 30th October, Barra (with particular reference to Barra Head, Berneray, lighthouse)

Wednesday 31st October, Uist (with particular reference to Shillay, The Monach Islands, lighthouse)
