Commencing with a visit to the Abhainn Dearg: Red River distillery, the first to open in Lewis for 170 years, we return to An Lanntair for a talk and tasting flavoured with some supernatural and ghostly tales from various distilleries. The theme will be ‘islands’. Not just ‘Islays’ – Arran, Tobermory, Highland Park, Talisker, Jura, and of course, Abhainn Dearg.

Gavin D Smith

GAVIN D SMITH is a professional freelance journalist and author who specialises in whisky. He is the author of more than 20 published books on drink and historical themes, including An A-Z of Whisky; Wort , Worms and Washbacks; Whisky Wit and Wisdom; The Secret Still; The Whisky Men; Ardbeg: A Peaty Provenance;  Goodness Nose (with Richard Paterson) and Discovering Scotland’s Distilleries. He is also co-author 3 volumes and notably has revised and updated Michael Jackson’s seminal, best-selling volume The Malt Whisky Companion for a 6th edition, published in spring 2010.

As a freelance journalist he contributes regularly to Scotland Magazine, Whisky Magazine, Malt Advocate, Whiskeria, Whisky Life, Whisky Etc, The Keeper, Drinks International and Malt Whisky Yearbook. He is a contributing editor for www.whisky-pages.com, and writes for other websites. He is currently working on a long-term writing project with William Grant & Sons, as well as preparing another whisky title and his third book about beer. In 2009 was appointed a Keeper of the Quaich.
